Oh yes, it's true. It's part of the reason I ended up having to come home early from my mission. Last time it happened I was in Alaska, and I collected it in a coffee mug out of desperation and brought it to the doctor. He thought it was actually coffee. The doctors thought for a while that it was porphyria (porphyrics do indeed pee brown) but the latest test precluded that diagnosis. So we still don't know what it is, but it is definitely hematuria. My dad says some possible causes are a small fish that swims up the ureter or gunshot wound to the flank. My current theory is old damage from when I broke my spine when I was 17. We'll see, I hope....
